‘He lent me his RSC Oberon cape for my school play’: Patrick Stewart remembered by readers

From coaching youth community theatre to supporting Huddersfield football club and delighting sci-fi fans at graduation ceremonies, the actor is fondly remembered Patrick Stewart – a life in pictures On Star Trek, Patrick Stewart could make anyone feel hopeful for humanity Patrick Stewart brought gravitas and complexity to the screen ‘He stood for the best of us’: William Shatner and more pay tribute What I always loved about Patrick was that he genuinely seemed connected to where he came from despite his global success. Once a Yorkshireman, always a Yorkshireman. I was lucky enough to see him at the Royal Shakespeare Company performing Hamlet, Merchant of Venice, and in Godot at the Haymarket, which is the only time the play has been so brilliantly performed as to make sense to me. I loved that he supported causes he clearly believed in, such as tackling domestic violence. He remained a good old-fashioned socialist. Got to applaud that. An unmissable documentary play, Tom Stoppard’s Arcadia with luminous Isis Hainsworth and ecstatic dance in a Norwegian museum are among November’s highlights Swiss director Milo Rau’s ripped-from-the-headlines approach to theatre has included shows about wars in Iraq and Congo and the exploitation of migrant workers. His four-hour documentary play (created with Servane Dècle) about the trial of the men who drugged and raped Gisèle Pelicot has been performed around the world and will be staged by the Young Vic at London’s County Hall on 30 November. ‘The Mosquito Bowl’: How a Parrot Proved to Be Peter Berg’s Biggest Challenge

Director Peter Berg faced numerous challenges shooting his latest film, “The Mosquito Bowl.” Based on Buzz Bissinger’s book, the film tells the true story of four college football stars — Tom Francis as David Schreiner, Nicholas Galitzine as John McLaughry, Ray Nicholson as Tony Butkovich and Bill Skarsgård as Bob Baumann — who are called […]

The Mosquito Bowl review – Netflix mixes football, war and cliches in slick by-the-numbers saga

Peter Berg’s handsomely made second world war drama about a football game before the battle of Okinawa is stirring but filled with eye-rolling dialogue Forgive me, but it is difficult not to be a little cynical about The Mosquito Bowl, Peter Berg’s grimly serious action feature situated (and marketed during many an NFL game) at the intersection of two predominant male interests: football and the second world war. Though both are certainly rich topics for cinema, and though I have been a fan of many a football/war story – most especially Berg’s NBC series Friday Night Lights – it is, let’s say, a tricky time for movies filled with dubiously nostalgic patriotism and masculinity. The trailer practically drips with a borderline parodic virility: a cadre of handsome up-and-coming male actors streaked with dirt; a group of men “trained for glory” and “called to war”, triumphantly hoisting aloft footballs, beer and guns to ponderous music. But Berg is a capable and battle-tested director who knows his way around both a clock-ticking thriller ( Deepwater Horizon , Lone Survivor ) and the football field. So while The Mosquito Bowl, adapted for Netflix by Berg and Mark L Smith from a nonfiction book by Buzz Bissinger, fulfills its promise of American male pablum – there is many a clunky monologue about honor and duty and the “white buzz” of adrenaline – it also delivers on competently made, absorbing action sequences. (In huge news for Friday Night Lights fans, the football scenes here are once again scored by Explosions in the Sky.) Both in sport and in war, Berg has a knack for grace within visual cacophony and chaos; graphic sequences in battle and from the 1944 Christmas Eve pickup game at Guadalcanal that gives the film its name suggest, far more than its anvil-heavy dialogue, the connections between the gridiron and the battlefield, how the fleetness and camaraderie of sport can be wielded for survival and killing. There is a stomach-churning catharsis in experiencing,
