Bill Maher Rubs Salt in Trump’s Midterms Wound: ‘Donnie, Are You OK?’

While his HBO counterpart John Oliver issued an urgent warning about voting GOP during the midterms, Bill Maher spent the majority of his time in the lead-up to the critical election dining with the Trump at the White House (and then bickering with him publicly), conducting an embarrassingly softball interview with Trump’s former press secretary […]

‘Too many stories exist only to make you think you’re on the right side’: Cristian Mungiu on Fjord, the Cannes winner that divided Europe

The Romanian auteur’s new film could have been the kind of homogenous ‘Europudding’ he’s railed against for years. Instead, it’s a culture-clash skewering of conservative and liberal values worthy of its Palme d’Or ‘Pffff!” Cristian Mungiu lets out an exasperated sigh. We are sitting in the basement of a London hotel, at the end of a long morning of back-to-back interviews for the Romanian film-maker, and his press handler has just snuck into the room to remind him of his next appointment across town. But Mungiu blanks him and leans on to his table, because he wants to tell one more story. In 2013, Mungiu was part of a delegation of European auteurs who travelled to Brussels to meet the then president of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso. At the time, the EU and US were in talks to slash barriers to trade between the two economic blocs, and the film-makers were lobbying the Commission to spare their industry from the deal . Being Heumann review – stirring biopic of a pioneering disability rights campaigner

Heartfelt real-life drama follows the late activist whose groundbreaking struggle helped build a rainbow alliance with gay action groups and the Black Panthers The remarkable story of the late US disability rights campaigner and wheelchair user Judy Heumann – pronounced “human” – is the subject of this heartfelt if Hollywoodised story from director and co-writer Sian Heder, based on Heumann’s own 2020 memoir of the same title. In the lead is British actor Ruth Madeley , who has spina bifida and is herself a disability rights activist; she gives a forthright, smart, sympathetic performance. Heumann’s finest hour was to get the federal government to sign into law Section 504 of the 1973 Rehabilitation Act , whose accessibility provisions had been resisted by Nixon, Ford and then Carter. In 1977, Heumann led a guerrilla sit-in occupation of the San Francisco Health, Education and Welfare offices, her group being a rainbow alliance including gay action groups and the Black Panthers. Secretary of State for Health Joseph Califano sensationally conceded and signed the bill that he and the political establishment had obstructed for years. He is played by Mark Ruffalo, whose nice-guy persona and one-note performance of exasperated detachment does however rather obscure the fact that in real life, Califano at first personally authorised moves to starve the protesters out. In the movie, this grim political decision is not explicitly dramatised. Continue reading...
