How can we efficiently collect light returning from tissues while also identifying what it tells us about blood flow in the deeper tissues? Conventional interferometric near-infrared spectroscopy (iNIRS) can distinguish signals according to the amount of time that light takes to travel through tissue, but it collects only a few photons. Camera-based systems capture many more photons, but this distinction is not realized when living tissue changes rapidly. Researchers associated with ICTER combined both approaches in a hybrid system. They showed that an appropriately analyzed camera signal can reproduce the blood-flow response observed with iNIRS for late-arriving photons, which are more sensitive to deeper tissues.
The American Society of Hematology has developed new reference ranges for children and adults with Duffy-null status, a common genetic trait associated with naturally lower circulating white blood cell counts that affects more than 66% of people with African or Mediterranean ancestry in the U.S.. These personalized reference ranges are the first of their kind and will help clinicians accurately determine normal and abnormal white blood cell counts, preventing unnecessary testing. The reference ranges have been published in Blood Advances.

B cells, a type of white blood cell, protect our bodies by producing antibodies that recognize and bind to invaders like bacteria and viruses. After an infection, B cells undergo rapid mutations in the genes that encode antibodies. These mutations—known as somatic hypermutations—allow B cells to produce antibodies tailor-made to recognize the foreign pathogens they just encountered, making them more efficient at defense.
