Ending UNRWA, Human Rights Council should be litmus test for new UN secretary-general

For too long, United Nations secretaries-general have preferred to virtue-signal and jet-set around the globe rather than manage their organization. Current U.N. chief Antonio Guterres has taken about 190 official trips spanning nearly 900 days — the figure would be even higher without a dip during the COVID-19 pandemic. Pair each of these trips with […]

America is holding an election. It needs a divorce

America doesn’t need an election. It needs a divorce. Sad to say, we’ve become two nations headed in two totally different directions. Red-state America still believes in the Constitution, American exceptionalism, and free enterprise. This means that you can come here from anywhere (legally, mind you), become an American, contribute to society, worship and raise […]

Get your STUFT together: Why the Pentagon needs a civilian fleet before missiles fly

Wars rarely begin when nations are fully prepared to fight them. They begin when political leaders would prefer more time, military planners want more forces, and logisticians need more ships, aircraft, ammunition, and supplies. That is precisely why the United States and its allies should revisit an old but highly practical concept: Ships Taken Up […]

Judge to probe whether Trump officials lied in golf course case

A federal judge said Friday she plans to appoint a special master to investigate whether Justice and Interior Department officials misled the court about the Trump administration's plans to renovate a D.C. golf course, according to news reports . Why it matters: The investigation could lead to professional sanctions, contempt proceedings or criminal referrals against administration officials over allegations government lawyers misled the judge. Driving the news: U.S. District Judge Ana Reyes opened a hearing Friday by reading ethics rules requiring attorneys to be truthful with courts, then questioned Associate Attorney General Stanley Woodward Jr. about the administration's conflicting accounts, according to news reports. Trump announced Oct. 18 the golf course would close Nov. 15 for roughly 15 months of renovations. Woodward told the court the next day there was "no plan to close the course." On Oct. 28, the Justice Department acknowledged Trump had directed the closure. Catch up quick: A preservation group and two golfers are suing the administration over what they say is President Trump's illegal plan to convert the historic, public East Potomac Golf Links into a championship-level golf course. After government crews cut down more than 400 trees, Reyes barred further tree removal without court approval and required 10 business days' notice before closing the park or making irreversible changes. The administration has appealed. What they're saying: "The Department of Justice will not be deterred from executing on the President's agenda," a spokesperson said in an emailed statement. The White House and DOI didn't immediately respond to Axios' request for comment. What's next: Reyes said she intends to appoint a special master who could review documents, question witnesses under oath and hold hearings. The government would have five business days to object after a special master is selected, the Washington Post reported . This is a breaking news story and will be

Musician wrote a ‘love letter’ to Canada with a new album – and some pointed commentary about the US president Lake Ontario, the vast body of water that straddles the US-Canada border, has gone by many names over the centuries: Lac Saint-Louis, Lacus Ontarius, Skaniadorio, Cataraqui Lake. But one thing it will never be called, says the Canadian rock star Bryan Adams , is Lake America. In his new song Lake Ontario, Adams takes aim at the US president, Donald Trump , accusing him of “breaking the peace” between the people who live on the lake’s shores. The ‘lake of shining waters ’ is what the Iroquois called her It’s a First Nations name – not an executive order. But things weren’t going his way in Iran So like a baby tossing the toys from the pram You can push us to the brink But where the open road divides Continue reading...
