Viktor Gyökeres the difference as Arsenal claim nervy win against Slavia Prague

Another away day, another victory for Arsenal. This time, the much-maligned Viktor Gyökeres stole the show as poor Slavia Prague matched the longest winless streak in European Cup and Champions League history despite a spirited late comeback. That now stands at 23, equalling the mark set by AEK Athens and FCSB – formerly known as Steaua Bucharest – while Arsenal are now unbeaten in their last 10 away European trips. After last week’s wobble against Fleetwood, there was no prospect of Arsenal making the same mistake again as soon as Noni Madueke fired them ahead early on after being superbly set up by Gyökeres. That was his third assist in his last five appearances, although Mikel Arteta will have been even more encouraged by the emphatic finish that had seemed to put the game beyond Slavia’s reach just before the break. While Kai Havertz remains his undoubted first choice, having another striker in form will only boost Arsenal’s challenge and it was noticeable that there was an extra spring in the 28-year-old’s step after his goal. For all the valid arguments against the Champions League group phase using a ‘Swiss model’ – and there are many – it has at least produced an entertaining spectacle, with the bigger teams facing each other more regularly and the games, especially this season, producing lots of goals. Last night Manchester United discovered a new brand of chaos-ball to take centre stage, and take some heat off Michael Carrick, while Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain reminded us all why they are considered two of the favourites for the trophy, scoring nine goals between them. Evanilson profits from costly Trafford blunder as Bournemouth punish Leeds

Accidents will happen. They also have consequences. Leeds were playing well, certainly better than Bournemouth for the first 30 minutes until James Trafford committed a grievous error. The goalkeeper made a horrible mess of a pass to an unwitting Ao Tanaka. In stole Justin Kluivert to set up Evanilson for a fifth goal in six matches. Where Leeds’s confidence sagged, Evanilson continued to find the best form of his time on the south coast. The Brazilian was full of tricks, flicks and intelligent movement until he was substituted. Thursday’s Prague assignment in the Europa League was being kept in mind. The continued rise of Bournemouth, celebrating a sixth successive win, is testament to changing times, a model club playing thoroughly modern football. Continue reading...
