Viewers stayed away from Fox News on a disappointing election night for Republicans

In early, preliminary figures, the news channel trailed several other networks in prime-time viewership On a midterm election night that was a huge disappointment for Republicans , with Democrats taking control of the US House and Senate, the country’s most prominent conservative television network felt the brunt of viewer disillusionment with Donald Trump and his party, according to preliminary audience numbers. The Fox News Channel, which often leads in viewership on election night, appears to have come out far behind the competition. According to preliminary “Fast Nationals” ratings dating from the Nielsen firm, the network averaged 3.882 million total viewers between 8 and 11pm, far behind broadcast networks NBC (6.519 million viewers) and ABC (4.906 million viewers), and even trailing fellow cable networks CNN (3.927 million viewers) and MS Now (3.922 million viewers). The midterms were a thumping rebuke of the US-Israel relationship

Even Trump seems to recognize that the relationship has become a political liability, and may never be the same On the eve of a midterm election that ended in an unequivocal rejection of his brand of politics, even Donald Trump seemed to recognize that the US-Israel relationship has become a political liability. Trump’s 11th-hour suggestion, on election morning, that he would cut military aid to Israel at the end of the year because, as he put it, “they don’t need it”, was condemned across the board – with pro-Palestinian advocates dismissing it as “desperate” and pro-Israel ones as “unserious”. 'Once-in-a-generation event: Historic election a shocking repudiation of Trump & the MAGA movement'

Erin Ogunkeye is pleased to welcome Adam Jentleson, President of the Searchlight Institute and author of Supermajority: How Democrats Can Build Lasting Power, For Jentleson, the Democrats' sweeping midterm victory represents far more than the familiar backlash against an incumbent president. "This is a once-in-a-generation event." But electoral breadth presents a governing dilemma. Can a coalition stretching from progressive reformers to culturally conservative Democrats translate its diversity into legislative action? "Pluralism is not just a political strategy. It is actually a moral good in a democracy," he insists. But electoral breadth presents a governing dilemma. Can a coalition stretching from progressive reformers to culturally conservative Democrats translate its diversity into legislative action? And can a party united by opposition to Trump sustain that unity when confronted with difficult choices over healthcare, immigration, economic inequality and climate change?

Following a resounding Midterm election defeat, Is MAGA Losing Its Grip on the Republican Party? Erin Ogunkeye is pleased to welcome Bryan Lanza, Republican strategist and Partner in Mercury's Washington DC office. "The big thing about MAGA was confrontation, in your face," explained Lanza. But following a veritable blue wave, he believes the electorate has delivered a warning: "We need to move beyond that." While Donald Trump has acknowledged the Democratic victory, at times combative, at times conciliatory, Lanza argues that the president must begin his final two years in office reversing damaging tariffs, addressing widespread dissatisfaction with immigration enforcement and navigating a highly unpopular Iran war.

Joy in Iran over ‘Trump’s defeat’ in US midterm elections – but war is not over

Iran celebrates its claimed role in ‘regime change’ amid pressure on US president to ‘finish the job’ with attack US midterms live – latest updates Iran this week unveiled a massive new billboard and banners over Enqelab Square in central Tehran. The billboard pledged in English: “We will kill Trump” – elevating the degree of personal animus with which Donald Trump is viewed in official Iranian circles. The poster depicts the US president behind bars with his head bowed. And in a sense, given the US midterm election results on Tuesday, Iran has indeed killed Trump, or at least the second term of his presidency. Trump’s reverse is all the more piquant because it comes on the day Iran’s leadership celebrates the anniversary of the seizure of the US embassy in Tehran in 1979, an event that ensnared Jimmy Carter, and a reminder of how Iran has ruined the prospects of more than one US president. Blue wave sweeps across America: 'In 1974, we had Watergate babies, now we have Iran War babies'

Stuart Norval welcomes France 24 International Affairs Editor Philip Turle and Hind Ziane, Geopolitical analyst and founder / CEO of Genpo. "In 1974, we had the Watergate babies. Now we have the Iran War babies," remarks Ziane with this striking historical analogy. Just as the Watergate scandal helped propel a new generation of Democratic lawmakers into Congress in 1974, Zian argues that public disillusionment with the Iran war, mounting economic pressures and dissatisfaction with Donald Trump's leadership may now be reshaping the American political landscape. Yet the significance of this veritable blue wave extends well beyond the Republican Party's reported losses. As international affairs editor Philip Turle reminds us, "They're not voting for Democrats because they love the Democrats. They're voting for the Democrats because they don't like Donald Trump." This distinction lies at the heart of a decisive electoral rejection, across America, of a wildly unpopular administration. A party can achieve a sweeping electoral victory without necessarily winning a mandate or even the lasting confidence of the electorate.

Tell us: what do you want to know about the midterm election results? Good morning and welcome to the US politics live blog. Trump, uncharacteristically gracious, accepted his party’s resounding defeat, congratulated Democrats, and told The New York Times that he was “absolutely willing to accept” the election results. That was very much in doubt after the Trump administration spent months seeking to exert greater influence over the elections process through executive orders and the courts. Deb Haaland, running in New Mexico, became the first Native American woman elected as governor. Keisha Lanca Bottoms became the first Black woman ever elected governor. Abdul El-Sayed, the victorious Democratic Senate candidate in Michigan, became the first Muslim voted into the upper chamber. Several key congressional races, including contests in Colorado, Michigan, Maine, New York, California, and North Carolina, remain to be called. Continue reading...
