Democrats finally decided to take rural America seriously – and won big | Anthony Flaccavento and Erica Etelson

Democrats won over rural voters from Maga in the midterms by focusing more on working people and less on culture wars Long before Jamie Ager entered politics, he was making a name for himself in a very different place: the meat counter of a grocery store in Boone, North Carolina. It was the early 2000s, and Ager owned and operated Hickory Nut Gap, a regenerative farm near Asheville. Over the next 20 years, he helped build a regional food system that delivered healthier food to thousands of people, improved land stewardship and made farming a bit more profitable. Normal Americans taught an election lesson — again

Voters were unambiguous on Tuesday: Don't B.S. us. Don't say you'll lower prices and end wars and corruption, then do the opposite. It's really that simple. This isn't so different from when Americans told Democrats not to B.S. them about Joe Biden's health, or about the words they should use, or social behaviors they should adopt. Why it matters: Most Americans agree broadly on most things, most of the time. They want competent politicians to focus on issues that meaningfully impact their lives. Like clockwork, every two years, Americans feel the party in power fails to deliver this — so they punish the incumbents at the polls. Politicians and some journalists tend to treat the American people as dopes and dupes who don't get what's happening in front of their faces. Tuesday's midterms, which will live in history as a Watergate-level reset for democracy, show that voters were paying attention and hit a boiling point. They didn't hide it. Polls consistently showed that all they really care about is rising inflation, job insecurity, ending the war, and stopping the rampant corruption. This was a repudiation of overreach, incompetence and corruption. People will tolerate it in small doses, but eventually reject it. In an age when people trust institutions less all the time , our institutions held. Courts restrained executive-branch excess. The press kept doing its job. Voters did theirs. But for all the hand-wringing that America is crumbling, that democracy is fading, or elections are eroding, the system worked. Remember: most Americans are normal and resilient. We should celebrate that. Despite it all, America works. For years, we've been reminding you about the power of Normal America : The vast majority of people — including our siblings, who are scattered from Oshkosh to Oregon — don't marinate in cable news, obsess about X or wake up thinking about Washington. They volunteer, they give to good causes, they'll help you in a pinch. They're good, they're fair ... a

The Jessica Pegula hot mic moment should never have happened. Tennis still needs more of it

Before anyone fries U.S. tennis star Jessica Pegula for calling French Open champion Mirra Andreeva as a “diva” who “needs to be humbled” in a conversation that she thought was private, and before Pegula and Andreeva feel pressured to clear the air with one of those forced-friendship TikToks, tennis might want to remember that it needs more of what it got from its WTA Finals hot mic moment Wednesday, not less. Just not like that. A representative for Pegula, the world No. 5 who sits on the playe

La Roux: Old Flames review – a breezy, hook-packed twist on a breakup album

(Vertigo) Devastating moments are dressed up with warm production and kinetic 00s R&B in the now quiff-less singer’s grownup fourth album Over the six years that La Roux, AKA Elly Jackson, was making her fourth album, the singer ended a 17-year relationship, confronted her weed dependency, received autism and ADHD diagnoses and lopped off her signature Johnny Bravo-esque quiff. One might expect the resulting record to be meditative and maudlin; the opening songs Cabin Fever and Lose Myself , focused on poor mental health and addiction respectively, suggest it will be fraught and claustrophobic. The former’s suffocating bass and unsteady synths segue into the latter’s unnerving nursery rhyme-like verses and thrashing chorus, reminiscent of the crunchier elements of HIStory-era Michael Jackson. What follows, though, is an autopsy of a relationship delivered through kinetic turn-of-the-millennium R&B and 90s-indebted pop. Jackson resists melodrama and, even at its most devastating, the songs are dressed up with enticing hooks and warm production. “Feels like you’re slipping right out of my life,” she admits on To Make Our Love, though the song bounces along like Ace of Base’s All That She Wants, while Night Vision, despite its crushing lyrics – “you keep building me up and then letting me go” – recalls the top-down breeziness of Mariah Carey’s Heartbreaker. True North by Paul Theroux review – an American’s view of Canada

The veteran travel writer turns his eye for detail on his northern neighbour and its people Paul Theroux’s arrival in Canada doesn’t go well. An immigration officer called Sweeney finds a small pocketknife in his car and fines him $500 for failing to declare a weapon. “I’m going to make you famous,” he angrily tells her, stumping up. Maybe he will, with this book. Canadians are reputed to be polite and easygoing, “slaves to their courtesy”, but the country has changed enormously in recent years. Will Theroux find it stuffed with Sweeney-ites? Luckily the answer is no. He issues a warning that, after 11 previous travel books, this may be his last; global overtourism appals him and so does much travel writing. But he shares Jack Kerouac’s delight in being on the road, and from his home in Massachusetts it’s just a four-hour drive to the border. His purpose is less to check out “the strangers next door” than to visit the village of Yamaska, in Quebec. It was there that a Frenchman called Antoine Theroux settled in the 17th century; a dozen or more Theroux families still live there; one local street is called Rue Theroux. The author isn’t only made welcome but presented with a certificate of honour by the local mayor. He repays the honour with a long chapter of family history. Continue reading...
