David Trinko: Lasting memories, lifelong lessons from Spartans’ title

It was 30 years ago this month that Lima Senior proved it could compete and beat anyone and, just maybe, so could the city itself. The Spartans came back from an early deficit to beat football powerhouse Cleveland St. Ignatius, 38-30, in the Division I state championship in November 1996, capping off an unpredictable 13-1 season. Along the way, the Spartans had five wins by a touchdown or ...

Trump's "war-time consigliere" and the Miller Doctrine

Stephen Miller is no Susie Wiles: He believes in almost limitless presidential power, considers the Democratic Party an extremist organization, and dreams of ruthless crackdowns on immigration and foreign adversaries. Why it matters: Miller, the new White House chief of staff, isn't just unlike anyone who's had the job under Trump — he's unlike any to occupy the powerful position in the modern era. He puts the hard in hard-liner and understands how to pull the levers of power to get his way and make the U.S. government a MAGA machine. Miller's appointment sets the stage for two years of partisan warfare with the new Democratic-led Congress, which is likely to launch investigations of Trump's administration, political committees and allies. "Stephen is Trump's wartime consigliere," Roger Stone, one of the president's oldest friends and advisers, told Axios. The big picture: Despite his post-midterm comments about finding ways to work with Democrats, Trump's choice of Miller signals that he's not looking for truces. He's prepping for war, and sees Miller as a brass-knuckle general and tactical expert impervious to criticism or traditional restraints. Trump's MAGA brain for a decade, the 41-year-old has detailed his Miller Doctrine in speeches, policies and press conferences: Presidential power is "very substantial and will not be questioned." Miller said those words about Trump's Muslim travel ban in 2017 on CBS's "Face the Nation," but to him they broadly apply to other areas of the executive's authority. Court authority is limited. In May 2025, when courts blocked aspects of Trump's deportation policies, Miller said the rulings were the work of "radical rogue judges" who were "at war" with the executive and legislative branches. The political opposition is a threat to America. "The Democrat Party is not a political party. It is a domestic extremist organization," Miller told Sean Hannity in August 2025. He also warned that if Democrats won Congress, "it's game over.

Freezer meltdowns and airline hoaxes are a taste of things to come. Hoping for the best is no longer an option | Elisabeth Braw

Acts of greyzone aggression aim to spread panic. Europe has to show the saboteurs that we are resilient It was as though a ghostly hand had switched the settings on supermarket freezers across Europe from “freeze” to “defrost”. From Finland to Ireland, they suddenly began heating up , many reaching 50C and food worth millions of euros had to be thrown away. But no actual hand was needed to cause the meltdown. This was a cyber-attack, or rather a chain of attacks. Like pretty much everything else in 2026, supermarket freezers are digitally enabled. That makes them smarter and more efficient, but like everything else that is connected to the internet, it also makes them more vulnerable. Russian hacktivists claimed they were behind some of the supermarket sabotage, but no one knows for sure. It could also be Iran, Iranian proxies, North Korea – or unaffiliated bedroom hackers. When Transport for London suffered a devastating hack two years ago, the culprits turned out to be two British teenagers . Governments regularly warn retailers and other companies about cyber-attacks and even provide cyber-defence training to businesses . The lessons of costly ransomware and cyber-attacks also mean many big organisations and retailers have become much better at keeping their payments and logistics systems safe. Two women’s college basketball players scored on the wrong basket. One nearly cost her team

Returning to work after a long layoff isn’t easy for anyone, even college basketball players, who are showing some rust one week into the season. Players shot — and scored — on the wrong baskets Friday on two separate occasions. Unforced errors happen, but two on the same day were a bit of a shock to start the season. First, Northwestern State’s Karma Wynn got confused during a full-court press in the first quarter and scored instead of passing it up the floor. The basket didn’t end up being all

Football Daily | You want proper football? Here are the FA Cup first-round ties to look out for

Sign up now! Sign up now! Sign up now? Sign up now! For the FA Cup, the early rounds are the juice. The first round proper to be played out over the long weekend is looking, well, proper. And on Saturday at 3pm GMT, a proper time, 31 ties will kick off. No VAR, either. At the stage when the bottom two Football League divisions join the competition, focus remains on those non-league clubs fighting for the honour of the pyramid … John Aloisi winning or choking the Chinese Super League , a league so ‘super’ that nine of all 16 clubs in it started the season on negative points due to ‘match-fixing, gambling and corruption’ by the way, and the league leaders not even scoring a single goal in seven hours, is really not something to lay upon someone with a bad hangover. Apropos of nothing, if anyone has any objections to my views on the Chinese Super League, please address any correspondence to: Mr K Mbappé, Madrid (there’s no point two of us getting into trouble)” – Noble Francis. As a man of a certain age frequently being reminded of how out of date I am, the recent readers’ letters regarding technical solutions to shirt-pulling (Football Daily letters passim) concerns triggered distant memories. In late 1991 I was working in the Patents Advice Centre, Newcastle Central Library. A gentleman asked for help to possibly patent an ‘invention’: a football shirt with the seams held together by Velcro, so that any tug would ‘open’ the seam and provide clear evidence to the referee of illegal cloth gathering. As I helped him search for possible equivalent innovations in our paper database (yes kids!) we chatted amiably until I asked how he had come to this seemingly simple yet brilliant innovation. He paused, reddened and began to exhale with elevated pressure: ‘Did you see Arsenal the other night? Tony Adams? Disgraceful. It should never be allowed! In fact, with this shirt it won’t be, and Arsenal will have to learn to defend decently!’ Happy memories, obviously irrelavant to

Hockey’s streaming spree means there’s one fewer thing holding Canada together

A shared joy of the sport has united Canada for much of its history. But it’s becoming increasingly difficult – and expensive – to watch games on television The Oilers lost to the Detroit Red Wings on 26 October, but Edmonton captain Connor McDavid got an assist anyway. He’s been doing that a lot lately. Just 16 games into the year, McDavid has 31 assists. It’s the fastest anyone has ever hit that milestone in any NHL season. But on that night in late October, many fans in Edmonton were unable to see McDavid’s feats – including patrons of a local bar – because it was one of nine Oilers games this season that are only available via a subscription to a premium streaming service. It’s the same story in every Canadian NHL city, thanks to changes to broadcasts that have meant that a handful of games for each team are now only available with a $12.99 per month subscription to Sportsnet+, a streaming channel owned by Canadian telecom juggernaut – and owner of the Toronto Maple Leafs – Rogers Communications Inc. But it’s not just Sportsnet+. The NHL also expanded its broadcast deal with Amazon, so when, two nights after the game against Detroit, the Oilers played their provincial rival, the Calgary Flames, only Amazon Prime subscribers could watch (true to form, McDavid got two assists in that one). What Ravens’ Joe Fagnano said after getting pummeled by Jaguars in first NFL start

Joe Fagnano did not have a very ideal first NFL start.
