Whatever attitude adjustment head coach Jake Dickert gave to his Wake Forest team during the week, the Demon Deacons took it out on Virginia Saturday night at Allegacy Stadium. Wake pummeled Virginia 51-7 to improve to 7-1 on the season and 5-1 in ACC play. Coupled with SMU’s earlier loss at Syracuse, the Deacs are …

Poor Nottingham Forest. And, especially, poor Nikola Milenkovic. It would be unfair to say that Brentford fluked a win in the 100th Premier League game at the Getch Community Stadium but Forest had 15 shots to their six and have every right to wonder why luck has deserted them so absolutely this season. Only one of Brentford’s goals went down as an own-goal, but both went in after hefty deflections off Milenkovic. A sixth successive defeat for Forest in games played on Hallowe’en must have them wondering about curses and an inexplicable run of misfortune. For both sides there has been a sense that things might have been better than the table suggests. No side has underperformed their xG as significantly as Forest, who went into the weekend third in Opta’s expected table but third-bottom in real life. Part of their issue has been the form of Liam Delap, who arrived in the summer from Chelsea for £50m , but has scored just once since. The 23-year-old is beginning to look like another victim of Chelsea’s trading model. Confidence shot, the purposeful striker of his Ipswich days has become a mess of flailing arms and wild finishing. By the time he was withdrawn 20 minutes into the second half, Delap had had three shots, none on target. Continue reading...
As I stare into a forest filled with waving ferns, flitting juncos and towering cherry trees, I worry that AI is destroying the very places where the essence of humanity still exists.

The trouncing of the far right provides a playbook for social and environmental movements in other countries facing elections, including the US, Spain and France Thank you, Brazil, for demonstrating how the far right can be trounced while protection for the Amazon is strengthened. In a world where nature and democracy appeared to be bleeding out in tandem, voters and forest defenders in this global south powerhouse have shown it is possible to staunch the flow. This should provide much needed inspiration and, more practically, a playbook for social and environmental movements in other countries facing elections, including the US, Spain and France. The astonishing comeback victory of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in Sunday’s presidential runoff against his extreme right challenger Flavío Bolsonaro has brought oceans of rapturous supporters on to the streets, while also thrilling conservationists, climate activists and social justice campaigners across the world. The fragile Senate permitting deal is a major priority across the energy industry, per newly filed lobbying disclosures. Why it matters: The filings reveal behind-the-scenes efforts by powerful interests and companies representing oil and gas, mining, renewables, environmentalists and plenty in between to shape the legislation. The big picture: The bill title (Bipartisan American Affordability and Jobs Act), its acronym (BAAJA) and its bill number appear throughout third-quarter lobbying disclosures. The bill was introduced Sept. 30, the last day of the third quarter. The disclosures, due Oct. 20, offer a window into efforts to influence the legislation during its drafting and negotiations. The lobbying extends beyond groups that specifically named the bill in their filings. Many others with a stake in the bill — like the U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the National Association of Manufacturers — list permitting legislation in other ways. Driving the news: Here's just a small subset of the parties in the arena. Industry groups like the American Petroleum Institute, the Edison Electric Institute, the American Forest & Paper Association, the National Mining Association, and the Data Center Coalition. Green groups including Earthjustice, the Nature Conservancy, and Defenders of Wildlife. Low-carbon power trade groups such as the Solar Energy Industries Association. State of play: The lobbying goes far beyond trade associations, with many individual companies also involved. They range from Chevron and BP to power giants like Duke Energy and Southern Company to geothermal startup Fervo. Industrial and equipment heavyweights like Caterpillar, Schneider Electric and Cummins are there, too. Zoom in: The disclosures also offer clues about which provisions attracted lobbying attention. For example: The National Mining Association identified BAAJA provisions that would change Clean Water Act permitting, including state water quality reviews and limits on lawsuits challenging perm
